I am sure most of you have heard of 50 Shades of Grey at this point. I looked up a summary the other day and almost started crying, I was so disturbed, disgusted, sad, and disappointed. How could that possibly be the book/movie everyone is gushing over, how could this be what some call "liberating women??" There is nothing liberating about BDSM (bondage and discipline, dominance and submission, sadism and masochism). The definition of liberate is to be set free from a situation, especially from slavery or imprisonment, in which liberty is severely restricted. UM HELLO? The relationship described in Fifty Shades of Grey is a form of sex slavery not sexual liberty. There are real women living in those situations and I bet you none of them would say they feel liberated. I truly hope and pray that this BDSM movement or whatever is put to an end soon. What I want to see is a movement of women loving themselves, demanding respect, and not using sex to feel loved. True love between a man and a woman is supposed to echo the love between Christ and His church. This is described in Song of Solomon aka the dirtiest book of the bible. The whole book is poetry of man and woman in love with each other while also being in love with Jesus. Their love (and therefore sex) is based on trust to fully give to one another. Everything between them is give and take, based on equality in Christ. "Place me like a seal over your heart, like a seal on your arm; for love is as strong as death, its jealousy unyielding as the grave. It burns like blazing fire, like a mighty flame" Song of Solomon 8:6. This is total trust between 2 people, they trust each other with their lives. The popularity of Fifty Shades of Grey says to me that society is willing to give up the relationship described in Song of Solomon for the relationship in Fifty Shades of Grey; one of fear, distrust, manipulation, inequality, and sadistic desires. I am probably being dramatic but I feel so strongly about this. Fifty Shades of Grey could not be more wrong and more opposite of what a romantic relationship is suppose to be. "Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres." 1 Corinthians 13:4-7. This is what we should aim for. This is what I will aim for in my future relationships and it is my prayer that all women would do the same. Ladies please do not believe the lie that Fifty Shades of Grey is, there is so much more for you.
Jesus I pray for this world. We have gone so far from what you intended for us. I pray that you would help people to see the reality of Fifty Shades of Grey. I pray that Your Spirit would work through this fad of BDSM and work it for Your good. Most of all I pray that women would not fall for this deception, that we would seek true love and acceptance in You and through You.
